This games was played in terrible weather conditions but the weather had no effect on the game itself. In a very anticipated game between 2 Portlaoise side started in slow fashion with both side creating half chances but neither side could break the deadlock. With 10 minutes played it looked like the teams would be all square going into the half time break but a mistake in the PAFC United defence gifted PAFC Rangers the lead. Less than 5 minutes after PAFC Rangers took the lead Ryan Cadwells brilliant header went high over the keeper into the back of the net for a deserved equaliser. With teams going in all sqaure at half time the game was still all to play for with PAFC United making changes for the second half with Goalkeeper Daniel Scully coming out of goals and Ross Doyle coming into our midfield these changed proved vital to how the game ended. As the second half started off both teams made half chances before a Daniel Scully pass found Lee Carroll Talbot in the box who finished with a right foot volley expertly into the bottom corner a true strikers finish. PAFC Uniteds Hardworking defence stood strong as PAFC Rangers pressed for an equaliser, Conall Rowney was outstanding throughout and helped greatly by Fergus Sheehy and Daniel Philips. A match winning save came moments later as James Whyte was attacking for PAFC Rangers but Mathew Dempsey was not to be beaten and saved a brilliant effort with his left foot. In the Final 5 minutes PAFC Uniteds wave after wave of attcks finally payed off as a hand ball made way for a free kick which Daniel Scully stepped up and drove and unstoppable effort past the PAFC Rangers defence and keeper a great goal by and Outstanding young talent. Eoin naughton pressed there defence and PAFC United could have snatch a few more goals but for some great defending by PAFC Rangers Colin Conroy. Washington Hamisi's outstanding contribution throughout ensured PAFC Rangers were kept at bay. With 2 minutes remaining on the clock PAFC Rangers had a corner which was amazingly cleared off the line by Ross Doyle who was brilliant in his second half display.
PAFC United held on for a great result and a well deserved victory.
U 8 Mountmellick 1 Portlaoise United 4
Our Under 8 squad recently travelled over to Mountmellick in a game full on end to end action. Mountmellick started off with the better chances in the first 10 minutes but with some great defending and goal keeping by PAFC we were able to keep Mountmellick at bay. PAFC pulled ahead midway through the first half with a Ryan Cadwell effort blocked and Lee Carroll Talbot notched home a right footed effort. Mountmellick hit back with an effort on goal brilliantly saved by Daniel Scully. From the kick out Mathew Dempsey controlled the ball on the halfway line and carved Mountmellicks's defence open with drilling a low effort into the bottom corner. Mountmellick came back on the attack but couldn't find a way past Daniel Scully in goal. Eoin Naughton was a thorn in mountmellicks defence as was Ross Doyle up front causing them problems throughout.
The second Half started off with PAFC on the attack once again with Washington Hamisi solid throughout in centre midfield. Eoin Naughton was attacking once again from the wing and crossed in a low ball across the box which was finished by Lee Carroll Talbot for his second goal of the game. Mountmellick hit back with efforts of their own but Conall Rowney, Fergus Sheehy, Conor Graham and Daniel Philips all played their part in keeping Mountmellick out. A brilliant save by Mathew Dempsey put PAFC on the attack once more with Daniel Scully taking a long throw in straight into the danger area which was clinically finished by Ryan Cadwell. With 5 minutes remaining Mountmellick clinched a deserved goal back. The game finished 4-1 which is another great result for PAFC. A very hard fought result in which the scoreline did not reflect Mountmellicks dominance throughout different stages of the game.
