The New Millennium
A highlight of the early years of the millennium was the development of Senior Women’s soccer in Ireland. Portlaoise played our part in the unprecedented growth and 2003 saw the Club lift the inaugural Midlands Senior Women’s League by beating Mountmellick 4-1. This superb team was captained by Richelle O’Neill and included Irish International Sylvia Gee.
In 2003/04, the men’s B team won the prestigious Eircom Cup and in 2005 our underage teams featured on the National stage when our u/16 side only lost out on penalties in the final of the All-Ireland Lions Cup and our u/18’s made it all the way to the FAI Youths Cup quarter-final, as well as winning a trio of leagues and cups.
