The Official Beginning
The first ‘official’ meeting of the Club took place on 6th July 1966, where the following were formally elected; John Darcy (Chairperson), Paddy Brennan (Vice-Chairperson), Seamus O’Brien (Hon. Secretary), Sean Delaney (Hon. Treasurer) and Committee members Tom Scully, Larry Dunne, Liam McEvoy and John Fennell. Patrons of the Club also in attendance were Chris Clerkin and the late trio of Eugene McCourt, Billy Blackwell and Paddy Clarke. The latter, a former Junior International and Athlone Town player, prepared the team for its baptism of fire into the Athletic Union League (AUL) Division 2 league in Dublin with the help of Mick Quinn and John Hartford.
The historic first match against Harold’s Cross Utd resulted in a 1-2 defeat, with the feature of the game being an outstanding goalkeeping display by Paddy Kelly. The team on the day, in old style formation, was; Paddy Kelly (goal), Seamus O’Brien (right full & Captain), Mick O’Reilly (left full), Joe Egan (right half), John Darcy (centre half), Larry Dunne (left half), John Loughlin (outside right), Jack Harding (inside right), John Fennell (centre forward), Paddy Doyle (inside left) and Sean ‘Dinty’ Delaney (outside left). For the record, John Fennell was the goalscorer and although they had a bad start, the team eventually finished ninth with eleven wins and ten defeats in their twenty-eight league games.
